It is now.
Just 24 hours after posting blog entry number 9, announcing that I had decided I was partially retired (aka I might be tempted back after September if I feel there's an assignment that looks like an exciting challenge), I woke up and told my wife and my girls, "Nope; I'm done".
The sense of relief once I'd made the decision was palpable, and they were delighted. Sadly, just 72 hours after making the decision, also palpable was the throat infection I picked up, which meant I had to postpone:
* my meal with my friend Sam.
* the catch up with Pete Mc about how he inspired the villain in my new trilogy.
* recording a podcast with Pete H and his mate, Chris.
"It will sort itself when it's ready," said the GP (who also had the virus). The illness is now into its 3rd week and getting a decent nights' sleep feels like a pipedream. What is it they say about when your body winds down, the bugs arrive?
So, life is now about navigating fixed income, getting fit again once I dare go back to the gym, and using my newly-found spare time (and my remaining life) to do the things I really want to do. Choosing what those are isn't an immediate priority - sounds advice from fellow retiree, Liz M, about not racing to be busy with just anything, because it takes time to settle on what you really want to do - but I also don't want to stagnate, so I'll slowly head into whatever lies ahead. Wish me luck.
I'll update you on my journey in autumn, probably.
